The killers of a Middlesbrough dad could spend the rest of their lives in prison.
Lee Hogg (38) and Terry Dalton (53) have been given life sentences with a minimum of 21 years and 20 years respectively for the murder of Carlos Boyce (36) and for causing grievous bodily harm to Joseph Spencer (36).
Carlos Boyce died following a violent assault at the home address of his friend, Joseph Spencer on 11th November 2022.
During a three week long trial at Teesside Crown Court the jury heard how Mr Boyce was found with fatal injuries inside Mr Spencer's home.
Mr Spencer had been left unconscious in the same incident and he needed hospital treatment for serious injuries. They had been subjected to a sustained attack using bodily force and weapons, with 96 injuries inflicted on Carlos Boyce alone.
Speaking after sentencing Senior Investigating Officer, Temporary Detective Superintendent Chris Motson said: “We’ll never know precisely what happened inside that address on that day, but the two men were clearly subjected to an extremely violent assault which tragically resulted in Carlos losing his life.
“Hogg and Dalton inflicted multiple injuries in a sustained and violent attack and then did nothing to seek help for the victims, despite knowing the severity of their attack.
“Instead, they chose to prioritise continuing their drug misuse while they did what they could to evade capture. Since their arrest they’ve remained unrepentant and in denial of what they did.
“We are pleased that justice has been served today, my thoughts and the thoughts of my team remain with Carlos’s family and friends who have suffered the most unimaginable loss of their son, father, brother and cousin.
"While no verdict will ever be enough justice for them, I hope they take some solace in knowing these violent individuals will spend a lengthy period of their life behind bars.
“Over the last three weeks family and friends have had to relive the tragic events, at times in graphic detail as they attended court for this trial. I’d like to commend their courage in doing so and the dignity that they’ve shown throughout the proceedings.
“Now convicted murderers Hogg and Dalton will now face the full consequences of their actions having been issued significant sentences by HHJ Crowson.”
Yesterday, the family of Carlos Boyce released this statement:
“Carlos was a loving and doting Dad, son, brother, uncle, cousin, partner and friend to many. He was loved and is greatly missed by all who knew him. Carlos was described by his son as ‘the best man in the world’ and that he was ‘his idol’.
"Carlos was described by his mother Susan as ‘her sunshine’ and the family will never be the same again without him.
“We are pleased with the verdict today and we take comfort from the fact that justice has been done but no verdict can fill the void left by the loss of Carlos to this senseless crime.”
