Call for ALL GPs to be Trained in Transgender Healthcare
A transgender woman from Teesside is calling for all GPs to receive specialist training to deal with patients like her.
Emma Roebuck runs an LGBT support group in Darlington and she says some doctors don't consider being transgender as a medical condition.
She says many of the transgender people she helps feel that they can't trust their GP, which can have a devastating impact on their mental health.
It's after news that transgender patients in our region could be put on a 12 year waiting list for treatment if backlogs aren't tackled.
Emma - who runs Gay Advice Darlington and Durham - said:
"**I'd like to see GPs to be a bit more knowledgeable and a bit more supportive.
"There are a handful of GPs that are, and can be, quite offensive and who deny the existence of the condition and don't think it should be treated on the NHS."
