A66 to close eastbound this weekend for essential maintenance
A major route through Middlesbrough will be closed this weekend to allow for essential repair and maintenance work.
The A66 will shut eastbound at the overbridge at Newport interchange from 9pm on Friday evening, until late on Sunday.
Work including waterproofing and renewing bridge joints will be undertaken.
Full traffic management will be in place, with diversions off the slip road at Newport roundabout, re-joining the A66 at the on-slip from the roundabout.
To reduce the amount of traffic on the A66 during the works, the A19 eastbound slip roads to the A66 will also be closed. Traffic from the A19 northbound will divert via Portrack Interchange, while those travelling from the A19 southbound will use Mandale Interchange.
Motorists are advised to plan their journeys ahead, especially for the Middlesbrough Mela, which takes place in Albert Park on Saturday and Sunday.
The same eastbound section of the A66 will close overnight, from 9pm to 6am, on September 11 and 12, with overnight resurfacing of the A66 eastbound between the A19 and Newport Interchange also taking place from September 13 to 16.
Further overnight closures will be in place from September 18 to 20 on the A66 westbound carriageway between the Newport interchange and the A19, again for resurfacing.
A Middlesbrough Council spokesman said: “These works are vital to ensure the maintenance of one of Middlesbrough’s busiest roads.
“We apologise for any disruption the works may cause and advise drivers to plan ahead, expect short delays and take a different route if possible.”
