Golden Globes: Hollywood stars show support for Charlie Hebdo
Including George and Amal Clooney, Helen Mirren and Joshua Jackson
In a show of solidarity for the victims of the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris, George and Amal Clooney, Helen Mirren and Joshua Jackson all displayed ‘Je Suis Charlie’ signs at the Golden Globes red carpet in Los Angeles last night.
Turning up at the awards to receive his Lifetime Achievement honour, George Clooney wore a ‘Je Suis Charlie’ badge on his breast pocket, while wife Amal displayed the same badge on her handbag.
British acting legend Helen Mirren, Patricia Arquette, French composer Alexandre Desplat, Joshua Jackson and his partner Diane Kruger all held up pieces of paper emblazoned with the slogan, while Kathy Bates flashed the words on her iPhone.
The support wasn’t just confined to the red carpet. During his poignant acceptance speech, George Clooney said: "Today was an extraordinary day.
“There were millions of people who marched not just in Paris but around the world, and they were Christians and Jews and Muslims, they were leaders of countries all over the world and they didn’t march in protest.
"They marched in support of the idea that we will not walk in fear. So Je suis Charlie."
Theo Kingma, the President of organisers the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), got a standing ovation for his speech, in which he said, “Together we will stand united against anyone who would repress free speech anywhere, from North Korea to Paris.”
Rocker and actor Jared Leto also voiced his support when presenting Patricia Arquette with her Best Supporting Actress award.
He said: "To our brothers, sisters, friends, and family in France, our thoughts, our prayers, our hearts are with you tonight. On vous aime. Je suis Charlie (We love you. I am Charlie)."
And Best Actress winner Amy Adams told reporters before the lavish ceremony: "My heart goes out to everybody in Paris and everybody who has been touched by violence.”
