It's dubbed the ‘Fifty Shades Effect’

Borrowing of erotic novels in UK libraries has surged an incredible 500% in the past 12 months.

Dubbed the ‘Fifty Shades Effect’ in homage to EL James’ best selling trilogy, libraries are experiencing a spiralling demand for racy books.

Last year’s most popular erotic fiction title was Indigo Bloome’s ultra-saucy ‘Destined To Feel’, which was borrowed well over 11,000 times.

In contrast, the most popular erotic novel in 2012 – Laurell K Hamilton’s ‘Divine Misdemeanours – was borrowed just 1,500 times across UK libraries.

As well as the influence of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ on mainstream literature, another contributing factor is believed to be to the sharp rise is the increase of self-service library checkouts so borrowers can remain anonymous.

Despite its massive impact, Fifty Shades doesn’t appear in the Public Lending Right (PLR) erotic chart as it’s classified as a romance novel.

The first book in the trilogy is the third most borrowed book overall across all genres behind Lee Child’s ‘The Affair’ and ‘A Wanted Man’.
