Cheryl Cole has revealed she sent Simon Cowell an expletive strewn text saying “I hate you” when she was axed from The X Factor USA.

The Geordie icon left the UK X Factor in 2011 to be a judge in Simon Cowell’s newly launched American version, however after filming auditions in Los Angeles and Chicago she was abruptly dumped from the show.

Opening up about the incident, Cheryl has now revealed that her very sweary text to Simon Cowell read: "Fk you, Fk Fox, Fk the orange and purple outfit. Fk the big hair. Fk the UK X Factor. Fk you all. I hate you."

She added to Elle Magazine: "I can talk about this because I'm okay about it now.

"But I went through hell and it literally drove me mad. I became so desensitised, you could say terrible things to me and I wouldn't even think about it.

"I'd read awful stuff about myself and not blink. I shut down because I didn't know what else to do."

However, three years on she says that Simon definitely made the right call: "Now, I can say that Simon was right to get rid of me.

“I wasn't well in the head when that was going on, so it wasn't going to work. But he wasn't right not to tell me to my face."

Cheryl, who is currently filming the auditions for the UK X Factor, won an undisclosed payout from the producers of The X Factor USA after settling out of court last November.

Elsewhere in the candid interview, Cheryl claimed she went through a breakdown last year.

"It only hit me at the beginning of 2013 that I'd completely lost myself. I'd look in a mirror and think, 'Who the hell is she?'" she said.

"I didn't know what I thought or felt about anything, couldn't make decisions - I didn't even know what to eat or drink.

"Something was seriously wrong: it felt like a nervous breakdown."

The X Factor returns to television screens next month.
