Bob Hoskins Dies From Pneumonia Aged 71

The star of Hook, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Super Mario Bros.

British actor Bob Hoskins has died from pneumonia at the age of 71.

The much-loved star of movies including Hook, Mona Lisa, Super Mario Bros. and Who Framed Roger Rabbit died on Tuesday (29th April) in hospital surrounded by his family.

Two years ago he announced his retirement from acting after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

A statement from his wife Linda and children Alex, Sarah, Rosa and Jack reads: "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Bob.

"Bob died peacefully at hospital last night surrounded by family, following a bout of pneumonia.

"We ask that you respect our privacy during this time and thank you for your messages of love and support."

Born in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk on 26th October 1942, Bob started out on the stage before landing his first major TV role in On the Move in 1976.

His role as George in the 1986 movie Mona Lisa earned him a Best Actor Golden Globe and BAFTA Award plus a nomination at The Oscars.

Bob’s final movie role was as Muir in the 2012 movie Snow White and the Huntsman.

In a Twitter post today, BAFTA wrote: “We're deeply saddened to learn that Bob Hoskins has passed away.”

Stephen Fry said: "Oh no, Bob Hoskins. Gone? That's awful news. The Long Good Friday (was) one of the best British movies of the modern era."

Simon Pegg wrote: "Really sad news about Bob Hoskins. Great and varied career."
