Benedict Cumberbatch: 'My surname sounds like a fart in a bath'
He once ditched his unique surname
Benedict Cumberbatch ditched his surname before his career took off, as he believes it “sounds like a fart in a bath.”
The Oscar nominated actor was speaking at a press junket in Los Angeles to promote The Imitation Game when he made the revelation.
He said: “I started off as Benedict Carlton, which is my middle name, my grandfather's name.
“Cumberbatch sounds like a fart in a bath ... It is even funnier in an English accent. But an agent who was wiser than me told me it was a good name.
“People have had fun with it and they continue to!”
Benedict jetted to Los Angeles with his pregnant wife Sophie Hunter, just days after their Valentine’s Day wedding.
As well as promoting The Imitation Game, Benedict will attend The Oscars ceremony on Sunday night where he’s nominated for Best Actor for his portrayal of Alan Turing.
Benedict will be hoping he fares better than at The BAFTAs earlier this month where he was beaten to the Best Actor gong by Eddie Redmayne.
