A stolen lorry has been rammed into the front of an Arbroath convenience store in an attempted break-in.

The Mayfield Foodstore on Mayfield Terrace was hit around 5.50am today - another shop was also targeted.

A car parked on Lethnot Road was struck by the lorry a short time later.

Officers say enquiries are ongoing

Local resident, Diana Lewis was sleeping when the incident happened.

The 69 year-old said: “I got woken up by quite a loud bang… and then another bang came after it.

“It was just like a big strong gust of wind.

“I took my time to get up which was about five minutes, ten minutes, shaking like a leaf and I didn’t want to open the blinds or the door.

“If I was in the house next door I would have been killed because it was that near.”

Diana added: “These are new builds, and you feel safer here, but now, I don’t feel safe.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 5.50am on Friday, 22 March, 2024, we received a report of an attempted break-in to two shops in Mayfield Terrace, Arbroath involving a stolen lorry.

It was also involved in a crash with a parked car in Lethnot Road a short time later.

Enquiries are ongoing."
