Angus Council: Monifieth Library building to hit the market
Monifieth Library building to hit the market
The Monifieth Library building is to be sold off as the local authority seeks to ditch its unused buildings.
Councillors unanimously agreed to put the High Street building on the market during a policy and resources committee meeting on Tuesday.
It comes after plans for a new community hub in the town, which will also be home to a new library, were approved by Angus Council last year.
It’s hoped the £2m project could be finished by the end of the year.
When completed, it will also feature an activity hall, cafe, kitchen, gym space, toilets, and changing areas.
Monifieth Library building to be sold off
At Tuesday’s committee meeting, councillors stressed the sale of the library building must align with the completion of the new site to ensure Monifieth is not left without vital community services.
Independent councillor Lois Speed said: “I just wondered if there are any kind of mitigations in place if Monifieth Library was to be sold before the new premises is up and running?
“Are there things in place to ensure residents of Monifieth aren’t going to be left without those vital services?”
However, officers assured councillors the timing of the sale and the opening of the new facility would be aligned.
Director of Infrastructure and Environment Graeme Dailly added: “We would ensure the timing is done correctly if we were successful in terms of marketing the property.”
Councillors unanimously agreed on plans
Councillors welcomed the plans to see the library move to its new home – with hopes its future location will be a prosperous move for the service.
Conservative councillor Craig Fotheringham said: “I remember in the 80s, I think Monifieth was under Dundee District Council at that time, where they proposed to close Monifielth Library.
“There was a huge public outcry about it.
“But I think what we’ve agreed already – that the library is going to go into the new building – is going to ensure the long-term future of the library.”
