The historic Cupar Highland games has disbanded following a lack of volunteers.

The decision to call time on the event, started in 1979, comes as organisers say they were "unable to find anyone to take on the games."

This follows the games cancellation in 2022.

In a statement on social media organisers said: "The committee of Cupar Highland Games regret to inform you that the games are now disbanded.

"Unfortunately we have been unable to find anyone to take on the games and therefore we have taken the decision to close the games.

"We would like to thank all attendees, suppliers and supporters for their support over the last few years."

Reacting to the news, Cupar Liberal Democrat Councillor Margaret Kennedy, said: "Very sad indeed.

"However, well Loved events always need new volunteers to keep going. Thank you to all who have given of their time and resources over the year."

The games had previously hosted the Scottish Tug-of-war Championship.

Athletes such as Linsey McDonald, Liz McColgan and Yvonne Murray took part in the games athletic meetings.

Former chieftains include North East Fife MSP Willie Rennie and former Liberal Democrat leader Menzies Campbell.
