Woman lied about sick family members to obtain money from Royal Wootton Bassett residents

A woman who made up false stories about sick family members in order to obtain money from Royal Wootton Bassett residents has been convicted of fraud.

30 year old Gemma Yates pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud by false representation in a hearing at Swindon Magistrates’ Court last month.

The court heard between December 2022 and March 2023, Yates knocked on doors asking for money for a taxi.

Police say many of the victims were elderly.

She has been given a community order and is required to undertake drug rehabilitation, and pay £80 compensation.
