Angry Swindon fans to protest owner Morfuni ahead of Grimsby clash
Furious supporters are demanding the Australian sells the club
An angry group of Swindon Town supporters are staging a march and protest rally later today as they call on the clubs owner to sell the club.
The Spirit of 69 (SO69) fan action group is set to gather this afternoon at the county business park before marching to the stadium ahead of Saturday's fixture with Grimsby Town at the County Ground.
Fans will be wearing orange hats as a sign of their protest, and are encouraging other unhappy fans to do the same.
The group claims chairman Clem Morfuni has failed to effectively guide the club during his ownership.
The Robins slipped to their worst ever EFL finish last season, 19th, and currently sit two-points above the dropzone, having fallen to the bottom of the table earlier this month.
SO69 co-founder, Terry Pierce said the club is at it's 'lowest-ebb', adding: "On-pitch performances are simply a manifestation of the systemic incompetence the club’s owner and senior management have consistently shown over the last three years."
SO69 say Mr Morfuni's tenure at the club has seen matchday attendances drop by a quarter in the last 12 months, while also claiming the list of creditors is growing, with front-line emergency services said to have gone unpaid a number of times.
Mr Pierce said: “One visit to the County Ground will show a proud football club at the heart of its community that is absolutely crumbling, and being allowed to do so. Our storied ground is being left to rot. Fans are routinely taken advantage of and treated horrendously. The club shop is barren and unpaid bills pile up."
The group is demanding Mr Morfuni lists the club for sale.
Mir Pierce said: “The club we love is not being cared for by the current custodian, and he therefore has to leave, before the decline becomes terminal.
“Spirit of ‘69 is about the fan base coming back together. It’s about giving fans who have suffered in silence, but are now ready to join like-minded people to stand together and show Mr Morfuni that Swindon fans will not stand by and watch our club die on his watch.
“We will not rest until Mr Morfuni publicly and formally takes accountability, and welcomes offers for Swindon Town."
