People across Swindon are being encouraged to give feedback on a major climate action plan.

The Borough Council wants its corporate operations to be carbon neutral by 2030, compiling a 'Carbon Reduction Strategy' to achieve this ambition.

Research, carried out by the authority, into the town's main sources of emissions is included in the draft.

It outlines how these points of supply will be alleviated over the next decade.

The report also explains how residents and businesses will be supported, to play their part in the entire borough eventually achieving net zero carbon emissions.

'Climate Emergency'

Over the past few years, Swindon Borough Council has opted against declaring a 'Climate Emergency' - unlike many other local authorities across the UK.

Despite this, the Borough Council claims it has recently invested in solar energy - as well as encouraging electric and hydrogen vehicles.

The town's street-lights have also been changed to LED, in a bid to make the area more eco-friendly.

'The will and commitment is there'

Back in January 2020, Councillor Garry Sumner - Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning - responded to the authority's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality:

“Climate change is, justifiably, right at the top of the political agenda at the moment, and this Council recognises how important it is for everybody to do their bit for the benefit of present and future generations.

“We all have a long way to go but the will and commitment is there and the target has been set".

Residents can have their say on the Strategy until Friday 8 January.
