Swindon at the heart of game changing wind tech
Swindon Council has given the go ahead for a new prototype
Swindon Council has given the Science Museum the green light to host a new prototype energy generator, which they hope will change the perception of wind powered electricity.
Wind power has often been controversial, with many people being put off the sight of large windmill turbines standing high up on hills. However, the museum has teamed up with engineers Seamach Energy to trial a new technology that means no huge sails, and it doesn't have to be on such a tall support tower.
Based on the technology used in jet engines, Wroughton Airfield to the south of the town will be the host for the next 5 years.
Seamach Energy says, "Taking a fresh look at renewable wind technology has enabled us to design and patent a next generation wind turbine. This represents a potential game changing opportunity in relation to build and operational costs resulting from a significant uplift in the generating capacity per installation.
"It is important to note that what is not proposed is a traditional three bladed wind turbine"
Drawings of the model show a squat structure, looking rather like a domestic electric fan heater, on a small tower.
