Both of Swindon's new Labour MPs have been in London this week - as they've sworn-in to the brand new Parliament.

They both gave their oaths of allegiance to the Crown - which is something required by UK law before any elected representative can take their seat, both, in the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

In fact, MPs cannot take their seat, speak in debates, vote or receive a salary until taking the oath or affirmation.

According to Parliament.uk, those who don't take an oath or affirmation could be fined £500 and have their seat declared vacant “as if they were dead” if they attempted to do so.

Earlier this week, both MPs gave their oath, using the words: "I do solemnly, sincerely and truly declare and affirm that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles, his heirs and successors according to law."

On social media, Heidi Alexander, Swindon South's representative said: "It’s fair to say that both of us have had lots of big changes in our lives in the last week but I couldn’t have wished for a better person to be on the journey with than Will Stone (Swindon North).

"It's back to Swindon for us both this evening."

Last week marked a big change in the political landscape of Wiltshire in the aftermath of the General Election.
