People are being urged to stay safe around open water as the nights are getting longer.

This comes after the recent passing of William Coker, who sadly drowned in the River Thames in July.

William, who played football for Calne Town and Highworth Town, was just 23 when he died after getting into difficulty in the water in Oxfordshire in July.

In a statement following his death he was described by the manager of Highworth Town FC Paul Braithwaite as a "super polite and respectful lad who loved football so much."

Calne Town also issued a statement and said he had been taken "far too early" and "was liked by everyone."

A safe swimming group in Swindon are now urging the public to beware of the dangers of wild water swimming, and have given advice on how to keep yourself safe if you fall into water.

A spokesperson for the group, Neil Rushton, said that the UK has different rules to other countries when it comes to teaching people how to swim.

He said: “25% of children who leave primary school in England are not able to swim in other countries.

“In Europe, it's made a requirement that they have to learn to swim before they leave primary school. It's a shame it's not in England.”

Neil also spoke about the threats to be wary of when in water, he continued: “Be aware of hazards, understand the risks of natural water bodies such as rip currents, ties underwater, hazards like rocks of vegetation, and obviously avoid alcohol.

“Create layers of protection, enclosed pools with fences. Install the fence for the self closing or self latching gate that completely separates the pool.

“Don't leave children unattended in or near water, including bathtubs. Designate a specific water watcher when at a crowded pool or beach to ensure no one gets distracted.

“Stay together. Never swim alone. Swim with a buddy, and keep track of where everyone is at all times.”
