It has been confirmed that Sir Robert Buckland will not be part of Rishi Sunak's new Conservative cabinet.

The South Swindon MP has resigned from his role as Secretary of State for Wales.

He initially took the job in July, before being reappointed by Lizz Truss in early September.

During the Tory leadership race in the summer, Mr Buckland initially pledged his support to Rishi Sunak. However, the experienced politician publicly changed his allegiances part through the contest, favouring Ms Truss instead.

She went onto become the Conservative leader, before stepping down last week.

The Welshman has held the roles of Solicitor General, Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor during previous governments. He has served as South Swindon's MP since 2010 and was knighted in January 2022.

In his resignation letter, Mr Buckland said the new Prime Minister can be "assured of my support from the backbenches".
