Concerns over sewage pollution and river health continue to grow across the South Cotswolds, with local MPs calling for urgent action to protect waterways.

South Cotswolds MP, Roz Savage, has been a vocal advocate for cleaner rivers, highlighting the dangers posed by litter, debris, and untreated sewage.

Savage, who has made river health a key issue during her election campaign, praised the efforts of communities who take part in local clean-ups and water monitoring initiatives.

On Saturday 13 September, Roz joined local volunteers in Lechlade for a river clean-up and water quality testing session at the Thames.

It was an event that helped to measure the health of the river while joining in with efforts to remove litter and debris from the water and riverbank. Following the event, Roz said:

"The Thames at Lechlade is a beautiful stretch of river, and it deserves to be cherished and protected. It was fantastic to join volunteers today who are rolling up their sleeves to care for the river – and all credit to Karen Shaw for her energy and commitment to protecting our waterways.

Testing the water quality and cleaning up the river sends a clear message: our communities want action on sewage and pollution. Clean and healthy rivers are vital for wildlife, for people, and for future generations and I will keep holding our water companies to account until we see the change that is urgently needed."

Data collected through citizen science projects, including water quality testing kits, provides crucial evidence for campaigns advocating stronger protections for rivers.

For Savage, the goal remains clear — ensuring waterways across Gloucestershire and the wider South Cotswolds are preserved and restored for the long term.
