Officers in Swindon are appealing for the public’s help following a number of incidents involving illegal riding of motorcycles in the Penhill and Pinehurst area.
On Saturday (12/03), one of the individuals caused issues after the local Park Run event at Sevenfields.
Then shortly before 2pm on Tuesday 15 March, the group were seen shouting at local people in the same area, before a man in his 50s attempted to engage with the group. One of the riders kicked the man to his hand, causing his phone to fall to the ground. Fortunately, the man was not injured but was shaken up.
Reports have also been taken of scramblers being ridden in an anti-social manner in the Pinehurst area.
Neighbourhood Insp Carly Nesbitt said: “We are aware of a group of individuals who have been riding scrambler bikes around the area for some time now – the manner of riding is unacceptable.
"They are using public open spaces frequented by walkers and runners, footpaths, pavements and often riding at excess speed. Not only is this dangerous for those riding the bikes, but they are putting others at risk. Young families, school children and elderly residents are amongst those using these footpaths and the actions of this group of individuals is putting people at risk of being involved in a collision. If someone were to be injured, or worse killed, it would devastate the community.
“We are regularly conducting patrols of the areas we believe these riders are frequenting, but we are limited with what we can safely do. Community information and intelligence is central to our daily business and we really need information from the public to help us identify those involved. We have an email address that local residents can use to report any information they have in relation to these bikes which could help – we know some residents may be concerned about contacting us but please be reassured any information received will be dealt with confidentially. Alternatively people can report anonymously via Crimestoppers.”
A Central Swindon North Parish Council spokesperson said: “Sadly, a lot of damage has been done as a result of the actions of these individuals to the community playing fields at Seven Fields. To keep these playing fields in good condition, and to provide our residents with functional facilities to enable participation is sporting activities that empowers a healthier, happier, safer and stronger community we need to prevent this type of vandalism from occurring. If you have information about these individuals, please get in touch with the police.”
