Swindon residents are encouraged to visit local attractions this weekend.

As part of National Lottery Open Week, several venues across Wiltshire, the South West and the country are opening their doors at a discount or for free.

According to new research, more than a third (36%) of people want to do more things they enjoy.

Kate Logan, Historic Properties Director at English Heritage, said: “In this day and age, people are really, really busy. You know, our weekends come, we have lives that are full of life admin and we often have to prioritise our jobs over, the world around us.

“So, this week is an opportunity to say “yes”. Say “yes” to joy, “yes” to exploring, “yes” to going out and seeing all of these fantastic places”.

Among the venues close to Swindon that are taking part are the Lacock village, the Chedworth Roman Villa and Avebury village.

The sites belong to different organisations which have received grants from the National Lottery, such as the National Trust or English Heritage.

“Over the last 30 years, the National Lottery has contributed £50bn to more than 700,000 community heritage, sport, arts and film projects. So, this is a real opportunity to celebrate that”, said Ms. Logan.

Current figures show that more than one in five people think that there would need to be more hours in the day to fit in both chores and social events.

Ms. Logan says this week presents an opportunity to put social events and fun activities first.

“More than one fifth of adults make plans knowing that they'll cancel them nearer the time because they have to prioritise chores and work or they just run out of the energy.

“So, hopefully getting out and about with your lottery ticket this weekend and in the coming week will be a real opportunity for people to, you know, say “yes” rather than “no”. Not to bail, but to go out and get re-energised with our heritage, our culture and our wildlife and nature”.

National Lottery Open Week runs from the 15th – 23rd of March.
