It's been confirmed that this year's Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) in Gloucestershire has been cancelled.

In another devastating blow for our region's hospitality sector, organisers of the RAF Fairford airshow have made the announcement "with great regret".

'There were simply too many risks'

Directors of RAF Charitable Trust Enterprises claim they have been "working tirelessly" over the past six months, attempting to resolve planning difficulties caused by lockdown.

They were collaborating with 30 countries to deliver the event in July.

But, in a statement, the Trust said: "Owing to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 during the crucial build up to, and delivery of, the world's greatest airshow, there were simply too many risks associated with pressing ahead.

"Whilst we understand that this decision will be met with disappointment by our many supporters, we know they recognise the responsibility we have, to all our stakeholders, to stage a safe and successful event".

This year's RIAT would have celebrated its 50th anniversary, but there are now plans to mark the occasion in 2022 instead.

According to organisers, details of an alternative Virtual Air Tattoo will be published in due course. The pandemic meant the 2020 event was also held online.

What if I've already bought my ticket?

Ticket-holders, who the Trust have thanked for their "stalwart and loyal support", will have two options.

They can either roll-over purchases to 2022, or claim a refund.
