A search of a site near junction 15 of the M4 in Swindon's now concluded, following the discovery of human remains there last month.
Officers have spent the last four weeks examining the patch of scrubland beside Meadow Way, after being alerted to the remains by a member of the public.
The area being examined was later expanded to include a large area of land beneath a flyover and part of the motorway verge.
DCI Darren Hannant, who heads Wiltshire Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team said: “We have carried out a detailed search of the area over the past four weeks during which we have recovered human remains.
“The search covered a large amount of challenging terrain in difficult conditions and I am satisfied we have searched all appropriate areas proportionately.
“Samples are undergoing scientific examination, including radiocarbon dating and DNA testing. They are also subject to anthropological and archaeological assessments.
“The scientific aspect of this case will take a number of weeks more but will hopefully provide greater insight regarding origin and age.
“Whilst on site, we have tried our best to minimise disruption to those living nearby. I would like to thank members of the public for their patience and understanding during this period.”
Investigators have stressed that there is no suggestion that these remains are connected to any particular case or missing person but are keeping an open mind.
