Movie screenings, specifically dedicated to people living with dementia and their carers, are now available in Swindon.

For the first time since the COVID pandemic outbreak in early-2020, Memory Cinema has made a comeback at Swindon Arts Centre.

Bosses say they are aiming to provide a setting that is "safe and understanding" for local residents who have dementia. The house lights stay on and doors are left open throughout the screenings.

Memory Cinema started its latest series of titles with Carry on Screaming this week. A number of other films are scheduled over the next few months, ranging from the 1930s to 2010s:

  • November 16th - The 39 Steps
  • January 18th - The Wizard of Oz
  • February 15th - Brief Encounter
  • March 15th - Dad's Army (2016)

'One of the best things to do for dementias is the arts'

Experts estimate that one in five people across the UK will experience some form of dementia or memory loss during their lifetime. The issue is expected to become more prevalent, given the country's increasingly aging population.

It's no surprise then that Memory Cinema's Creative Learning Manager, Oli Webb, claimed there was a "real need and want" for the project to return.

"One of the best things to do for dementias is the arts and actually keeping the brain active, whether that be singing, dancing, moving, doing arts and crafts, watching a film, watching a play.

"Any kind of activity for the brain decreases the degradation of the brain, which is what then causes the dementia," they said.

Those behind the scheme also want to provide tangible support for carers and loved ones of people living with dementia.

"They have an incredibly difficult job as well, especially if it's a family or friend caring for someone. They have to themselves have a bit of fun ... and just relax for a while, knowing that the person they're caring for is being looked after," Oli added.

The movies are free admission and refreshments are provided. However, anyone planning to attend is asked to pre-book via the Wyvern Theatre, which is affiliated to Swindon Arts Centre.

Memory Café

Memory Cinema isn't the only local project available for people living with dementia.

Wyvern Theatre is also running a monthly Memory Café, where Swindon residents can meet, talk and join the range of activities on offer. Support workers, medical practitioners and other advisors attend, giving people the opportunity to learn more about helpful services in the area.

Two more Memory Café events are scheduled in 2022:

  • November 7th - Favourite card and board games
  • December 5th - Wreath making
