A man, who pleaded guilty after being charged with dangerous driving and failing to stop for police, has been sentenced.

It's after he drove at 90 miles per hour in a 30mph zone.

Police say in doing so, he was endangering his own life, as well as the lives of three of his passengers.

At around 12.45am on May 5 last year, Lewis Johnson, 22, of Bydemill Cottages, Hannington, Swindon, failed to stop for police on Croft Road, on which he was driving at more than 90mph.

He then performed a U-turn and turned onto Pipers Way and led officers on a pursuit, during which he drove through two red traffic lights and temporarily turned off his lights in an effort to lose officers.

He then voluntarily pulled over on Pipers Way roundabout.

He was charged with dangerous driving and failing to stop for police, to which he pleaded guilty.

At a hearing at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on June 27, he was disqualified from driving for 14 months, after which he will need to pass an extended driving test. He was also handed a 12-month community order and required to complete 200 hours of unpaid work.

Roads Policing Officer PC Paul Davis said: “There can never be any excuse to drive at these sorts of speeds.

“He had three passengers in the car and had anything unexpected happened, or he had clipped a kerb, it could easily have resulted in a fatal collision due to the speeds he was driving.”

During this month, we are running an initiative highlighting the fatal five offences as collisions often increase in the summer months.

The fatal five offences are those most likely to result in a fatal or serious injury collision. They are:

  • Excessive and inappropriate speed
  • Using a mobile phone
  • Drink and drug driving
  • Failing to wear a seatbelt
  • Careless driving
