Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer criticises 'zombie government' during Swindon visit
He says Ministers are producing "absolutely no answers" amid rising living costs
Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer has criticised the "zombie government" for its response to rising living costs, during a visit to Swindon.
Official data has revealed that, in the three months to June, regular wages fell by 4.1% compared to last year, when inflation is taken into account. The real-term pay slump is a national record.
The figures come as energy bills are forecast to rise by between £2000 and £3,500 for UK households in October.
Speaking at Nationwide Building Society's UK Headquarters in south Swindon, Sir Keir said staff members had seen many people asking for financial advice ahead of next winter.
'Millions of people are really worried'
The 59-year-old believes his £29bn proposal to freeze fuel bills would be the only way to tackle the issue.
"What you've got from Labour is a fully-costed plan to deal with the increases that are likely to come in the Autumn and early next year.
"Contrast that with the Zombie government who are producing absolutely no plan, no answers, to what they're going to do about the energy increase in October, and then again in January.
"Millions of people are really worried about what's going to happen this Autumn and this Winter, and they are hearing absolutely nothing from this government," he added.
Ministers insist they do recognise that people are struggling with rising prices.
They say millions of low income households across the country are being supported with direct payments of £1,200, as part of the wider £37bn government package to help with the cost of living.
