Anti-knife crime campaigner praises Netflix show for depicting ‘real life’ issue
Adolescence has started conversations about protecting children
An anti-knife crime campaigner from Swindon is praising the new Netflix show Adolescence for its educational value.
Jordan Turner lost her brother Lee to knife crime in October 2021 and has been going to schools to raise children’s awareness since.
The British show focuses on a 13-year-old boy who stabs his female classmate to death.
Jordan, who runs the campaign Change Lives No To Knives, said: “It was really hard hitting, to be honest, because although to some people it's just a Netflix series, that is happening in real life.
“I liked the fact that he wasn't in a gang, he wasn't involved in anything he shouldn't be. He took his friend's knife and stabbed somebody. And that is, unfortunately, the reality of the world”.
Adolescence came out just over a week ago and has since been a talking point on many social media platforms.
“It has had an impact on people. People are like ‘Oh my God, we need to make sure our kids are happy in school. We need to make sure our kids feel safe’.
“And that's good, you know, because that is what we want, that is what we need. We can't do this alone. The parents and the schools and the guardians, they have to be involved if you want your child to be taken on the right path”.
Wiltshire Police recorded a total of 254 knife crime incidents in 2024.
