A message sent to a school in Swindon, that resulted in staff and students being evacuated, was a hoax threat.

Lydiard Park Academy received an email yesterday, which suggested a package containing explosives had been placed inside the premises.

Police say they're investigating - whilst the exams which the students are taking are due to take place today as normal.

In a statement, police said: "We can confirm that the message sent to Lydiard Park Academy School this morning (14/05) was a hoax threat and there was no risk to anyone inside the school.

"The school was received an email which suggested a package containing explosives had been placed inside the premises.

"Everyone was evacuated and our officers carried out a full search. No suspicious package was found and the area has fully reopened.

"Enquiries are ongoing to locate the suspect who sent the hoax message."

Superintendent Lucy Thorne, Swindon Commander, said: "I would like to thank the school, pupils, parents and other members of the public for their co-operation with what was undoubtedly an uncertain and frightening incident.

"Officers will be present at the school tomorrow to offer reassurance and answer any questions you may have. Please feel free to approach them if you have any concerns.

"We will be working with the school in the coming days to provide any further support that may be required."
