An investigation has been launched by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) after a pedestrian was fatally hit by a train in Wiltshire.

It happened around 2.00pm on 26th February 2025 at a railway crossing on Pewsey footpath.

The train is estimated to have been travelling at 96mph when the accident happened.

The RAIB says it's investigation will determine the events that led up to the accident and will consider:

• the factors which may have affected the decisions and actions of the pedestrian as they used the crossing,

• any previous incidents at Pewsey footpath crossing and how these may be relevant to this accident,

• the management of risk at this crossing and Network Rail’s wider strategy for assessing and mitigating risks at footpath crossings,

• any relevant underlying factors.

The RAIB investigation is independent of any other within the railway industry or by the regulator, the Office of Rail and Road.

The final report will include recommendations on safety improvements when it is published.
