Production has been temporarily suspended at a major car manufacturer in our region, for the second time in less than a month.

Honda has been forced to halt operations at its plant in Swindon, due to a shortage of parts.

Stockpiling, primarily caused by Brexit and the Coronavirus pandemic, has created congestion at British ports.

'Global supply issue delays'

A Honda spokesperson has told Greatest Hits Radio:

"Honda of the UK Manufacturing (Honda) has confirmed to employees that some production activities will not run Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 January due to global supply issues delays.

"The situation is currently being monitored with a view to re-start production on Thursday 7 January".

The firm was also forced to pause its Swindon production for several days last month, after encountering similar difficulties.

Permanent closure

3,500 staff are based at the South Marston site, which is due to permanently shut in July this year.

Honda made the announcement in February 2019, affecting thousands of local workers in its car production supply chain.

A government Taskforce has since been set-up, to mitigate the impact on employees.

In Swindon, the Japanese manufacturer has been assembling cars for more than 30 years.
