The Money Advice Trust charity say council tax arrears owed to Swindon Borough Council have reached more than £30m.

In total, they stand at £30.7 million. This is according to figures released today by the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government. Nationally, the figure is £6.6 billion.

It's thought the cost of living crisis is mostly to blame for the escalating levels of council tax arrears.

Steve Vaid, Chief Executive at Money Advice Trust says, “Unless changes are made at a policy level, arrears are likely to keep climbing. At National Debtline, we’re calling for improved collection practices, as well as greater investment in council tax support schemes, to prevent people falling behind in the first place.”
