Stonehenge could lose World Heritage Site status due to A303 tunnel plans

UNESCO are considering putting it on their 'in danger' list

Stonehenge could lose its listing as a World Heritage site if plans to build a tunnel on the A303 go ahead.

In a report, UNESCO is recommending the site be placed on their 'in danger' list - the first step towards a complete de-listing. The other UK site to be de-listed was Liverpool's Mercantile Marine Centre in 2021.

Plans for construction were approved in July last year - but a legal challenge has paused preparation works.

John Adams from the Stonehenge Alliance says: "If Stonehenge is placed on that list as a precursor to a de-listing, that would be two...50% of World Heritage Sites ever de-listed would come from the UK, which I think would be a huge humiliation and an international embarrassment."
