Funding for multi-million pound youth centre in Swindon confirmed
£3.8m of government funding will be used to refurbish the Lyndhurst Centre in Park North
Funding for a new multi-million pound youth centre in Swindon has been confirmed.
The refurbishment of the Lyndhurst Centre in Park North was announced last September, with Councillors hoping to secure central government funding towards the work.
£3.8m has now been provided by the Government's Youth Investment Fund towards the centre's refurbishment.
The refurbished centre will offer young people a variety of activities and training and employment engagement opportunities, including provision for children with special educational needs and disabilities.
It's hoped 100 young people can be supported each week.
Speaking to Greatest Hits Radio, Swindon Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Children's Social Care, Councillor Paul Dixon, says the centre will "provide targeted youth work and intervention work with young people."
"There is a real lack of youth provision, not just in Swindon, but in many areas," Cllr Dixon added, saying the centre will provide many opportunities for "learning together, building responsibility, and caring for the neighbourhood."
The new youth centre is set to reopen in March 2025.
