Specialist leisure operator GLL, which uses the trading name Better, seems odds on to be named as the operator for the Oasis centre when and if it reopens.

Owner Seven Capital is very soon to submit a formal planning application to refurbish the leisure centre in North Star, which has been permanently closed for a little over four years.

At a drop-in session for residents to view and discuss the company’s plans, managing director Damian Siviter was on hand to speak to people.

Asked by the Local Democracy Reporter whether Better were confirmed as the operators for the centre if Seven Capital’s plans get the go-ahead, Mr Siviter said: “I wouldn’t quite go that far, but it’s fair to say that they are our preferred option, and that we have been working very closely with them.”

Better was the operator of the Oasis after Seven Capital took it over about 10 years ago, and it was Better who announced its closure in November 2020. Better said that the costs of running the centre made it impossible to make sufficient profit, and that it would not re-open after the late 2020 lockdown.

Better also runs the six other council-owned leisure centres in the borough, under a separate deal with Swindon Borough Council.
