Cricklade Road in Swindon remains closed after a car crashed into a shop front.

The road is currently shut between Great Western Way and Ferndale Road, and we have been told it will be for a number of hours.

The crash happened in the early hours of the morning, after police were called to reports of a vehicle driving slowly and without lights on.

The vehicle failed to stop for police and then crashed into the front of a shop. The driver has been taken to hospital, although he isn't thought to have life changing or life threatening injuries.

Police have closed the road whilst the area is made safe, as a gas pipe has ruptured in the collision.

A spokesperson for the police has said, “We responded to reports of a vehicle being driven very slowly without lights on Cricklade Road, Swindon in the early hours of this morning.

“After failing to stop for our officers the vehicle collided with a building causing a gas leak.

“Our colleagues from the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service have been working with gas engineers where both the building and gas pipe were made safe overnight.

“The driver was taken to hospital to be treated for injuries that are not life-changing or life-threatening.

“The road has been closed while the area has been made safe and to allow for the collision investigation.”

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area and to find an alternative route.
