Liberal Democrat MP for Chippenham, Sarah Gibson, has welcomed Network Rail’s strategic report that recommends building a new station in Corsham to support population growth and increased rail usage.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer scrapped the ‘Restoring your Railway Scheme’ in July 2024 but insisted that individual reviews of potential railway stations would undergo consideration.

Sarah Gibson MP submitted a letter of formal support for a station at Corsham to ensure that this particular station would remain on the Government’s list of those that deserved consideration given the strength of the business case put forward by Wiltshire Council and Corsham Town Council.

When the House of Commons returned in September, Sarah Gibson MP submitted a formal ‘written question’ to the Department of Transport (see notes to Editors) in support of a railway station to be built in Corsham.

Following the report’s release, Sarah Gibson MP said: “The case for a station in Corsham is so strong that despite the cancelling of the ‘Restoring Your Railway Scheme’, Network Rail have deemed it to be viable and therefore, deserving of Government support.

“Improved connectivity will make a huge difference to those living and working in Corsham. From increasing high quality employment opportunities to improving accessibility to further education, this station will make a world of difference.

“I will continue to press the Chancellor and the Department for Transport to ensure that this invaluable public service will be delivered.”
