Charity demands Government road safety strategy after 19 deaths on Wiltshire roads
Wiltshire saw almost 300 serious and fatal collisions in 2024
Newly released figures have revealed 19 people died in crashes on Wiltshire roads in 2024.
The data, which is from the Department for Transport, shows the county saw nearly 300 serious and fatal collisions last year.
It's leading to calls from Brake, the road safety charity, for the Government to publish its road safety strategy.
Luca Straker said: "They keep saying they're going to publish the strategy, we want to see it very soon, and we also want to see it have really strong, bold, robust measures that are going to bring these numbers down."
They added that the figures should "shock and anger" people saying: "We kind of accept road death and injury as something that just happens in society, when actually these kind of numbers coming out should shock and anger us and should make us want to make sure that our roads are safe and that every journey is safe and everybody can get home at night."
Luca says bringing the numbers down would help other areas of society that are under pressure.
They said: "If those numbers come down, we will actually see, services having less impact. So we'll have, there's more space on the NHS, there's more space for the police to go and do what they need to be doing. If the fire, you know, there's so many different people that are affected."
A Department for Transport spokesperson said: “Every death on our roads is a tragedy and the safety of our roads is an absolute priority for this Government.
“We’ve been clear that more needs to be done in this space, which is why we are committed to delivering a new Road Safety Strategy – the first in over a decade and will set out next steps on this in due course.”
