It's been revealed that Speedway racing will never again be hosted at the Abbey Stadium.

In a statement, directors of Swindon Robins and Stadia UK, the company which runs the Abbey, said the decision has been made with "great sadness".

They had collectively carried out extensive investigations, hoping to keep Speedway racing at the Blunsdon racetrack, but concluded that it's no longer financially viable.

Rising living costs and the Abbey's inability to operate additional events were major factors behind the decision, as well as uncertainty over the long-term future of Greyhound racing, which is the Stadium's primary function.

"Speedway racing cannot achieve anything like a break-even financial position, short or long term," the Robins said.

The announcement also means that the Club will not be part of the upcoming 2023 Speedway season, having last competed in 2019.

Hope for the future?

The Robins have revealed that several potential investors are interested in building a new motor sport stadium in the Swindon area.

According to the Club, Speedway would form an "integral part" of the facility.

"A new company Swindon Motorsports Limited has been formed, with the intention of identifying a suitable site and achieving planning permission. It is hoped that this option will bring about the swift return of Speedway to Swindon," the Robins added.
