It's been revealed that £30.5 million is going to be spent on a major new road network in Swindon.

The plans are intended to link the Eastern Villages development, with up to 8,650 homes, to the rest of Swindon.

A new access road between the A419 Commonhead Roundabout and the southern end of Eastern Villages is included in the proposals. A path for cyclists and pedestrians would run either side of that road.

Also planned at Commonhead is a new signalised junction, as well as a mini roundabout in Wanborough village.

The Department for Transport (DfT) is contributing just over a third of the funding, with the rest being provided by Homes England.

According to the DfT, the project would ease congestion and improve local journey times.

'A huge boost to Swindon's economy'

Transport Minister, Baroness Vere, said: "Our funding towards this new road scheme will help make the New Eastern Villages site a reality - providing a huge boost to Swindon’s economy by supporting thousands of new homes and jobs.

"This new scheme has been planned with everyone in mind and will ensure fast and smooth journeys for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians across the area".

It's expected that the roadworks will be completed by autumn 2022.
