The annual fireworks display on Worthing Pier has been cancelled.

Worthing Borough Council says it is unable to provide a timescale for the completion of repair work to supports on the structure.

It has been closed since 4th October when engineers found one of the support's had been damaged during a storm.

An examination of the pier during the most recent tidal window found further strain caused by the weight of the pier.

The Borough Council says it could not guarantee the safety of even just a few people until extra supports are installed.

Without certainty the work will be finished by 5th November, and difficulty finding an alternative venue, the Borough Council and Worthing Lions charity decided to cancel the annual display on Tuesday.

Worthing Borough Council leader Sophie Cox said she knows "how disappointing" the cancellation is, but added "keeping people safe must come first."

"Our teams are continuing to work hard with our contractors to get the pier reopened as soon as it is possible to be sure anyone going on it will be safe."

It is hoped repair work to the pier can continue during the next tidal window, which is expected from 14th November.
