'Pioneering' Worthing Heat Network could cut carbon emissions by 90%
It's being funded by £5 million from the Government's Heat Networks Investment Programme
A new environmentally friendly heat source could soon be replacing gas boilers at 27 council buildings across Worthing.
The Worthing Heat Network would see heat extracted from the sewers below the town to be used in those buildings including Town Hall, libraries, hospitals and law courts.
Worthing Borough Council (WBC) suggest it could reduce carbon emissions by up to 90 per cent.
It forms part of the authority's commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030.
Leader of WBC Daniel Humphreys said: "It is genuinely innovative. Not so much globally, there are examples of other places doing it but in England we're really leading the way in this country and doing something that hasn't been done.
"It's going to link up a lot of buildings around the town centre...once that's done, there's no obvious reason it couldn't be extended out and more added to it."
