Yellow fish stickers are being placed on coastal drains in Worthing and Shoreham to warn that waste entering them is harming seawater quality.

The rollout starts in Goring on Friday, with stickers placed on drains from Amberley Drive to Wallace Avenue. The campaign is run by Adur & Worthing Councils with Southern Water and the Environment Agency.

A spokesperson for Adur & Worthing Councils said: “Surface drains take rainwater straight to the sea. If people pour things like paint, chemicals, campervan waste or dog mess into them, it goes directly into the water people swim in.”

Signs will be put next to the stickers to explain their meaning and direct people to more information. Southern Water and the Environment Agency will also have a stall at Goring Greensward on Friday morning to speak to people about local seawater quality.

The councils say the campaign will continue across coastal roads in Worthing and Shoreham over the coming weeks.
