A woman is being investigated by police after she made a false report of rape near Hotham Park in Bognor.

The woman contacted police saying she had been raped overnight between 20 and 21 April. Officers carried out a full investigation while she received specialist support. However, they later confirmed that the incident did not happen.

The woman has since withdrawn her claim, and police are now looking into whether she committed the offence of perverting the course of justice.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Cobbett said: “A lot of police time was spent investigating this report before we found no crime had taken place.

“We take all reports of sexual offences very seriously and make sure they are thoroughly checked.

“We encourage anyone who has been a victim or witnessed a crime to report it online or call 101. In an emergency, dial 999.”

Support and information for victims of rape and serious sexual offences can be found on the Sussex Police website.
