West Sussex tips to stay open during second lockdown
Here's what you can and can't take there
All eleven of West Sussex's household waste recycling sites will remain open following the start of England's second coronavirus lockdown on Thursday (November 5th).
West Sussex County Council has confirmed that no changes will be made to opening times at sites from Chichester to East Grinstead, nor will there be any difference in the types of objects that people are allowed to take there.
The rules also cover the temporary site set up in Crawley following a fire at the main recycling centre in Metcalf Way in July.
It comes after sites were closed for six weeks between the end of March and mid-May in response to the first wave of coronavirus restrictions.
Visitors are being reminded only to use sites if their journey is necessary and if the waste they have is not suitable for kerbside collections.
They must provide identification of their address when visiting their local centre as entry is currently being restricted to those with a West Sussex postcode.
People are also being asked to follow the social distancing measures in place for everyone’s safety.
West Sussex County Council has asked those going to be aware that:
- at present, due to social distancing, customers are not permitted to walk into these sites with any recycling or waste;
- vans and pickup trucks can now enter the sites but these types of vehicle will still require a permit with the exception of the temporary Crawley site;
- all vehicles over 2.2 metres high must use either Burgess Hill, Westhampnett or Worthing;
- vehicles have a gross vehicle weight restriction of 3 tonnes at all sites;
- trailers will be permitted at all sites with the exception of Bognor, Littlehampton, Horsham and the temporary Crawley site.
Residents can dispose of all items, with the following exceptions:
- Soil and hardcore will be accepted at all sites with the exception of Bognor and Midhurst.
- Plasterboard can be deposited at Billingshurst, Burgess Hill, Chichester, Horsham, Littlehampton, Shoreham and Worthing.
- Asbestos can be taken to Burgess Hill and Worthing.
The mobile service is now back to the normal service with restrictions on construction materials and hazardous waste.
They accept green waste, wood, general waste, small waste electrical and electronic equipment, metal, card and paper with the Witterings, alternating weekly with Selsey as per the usual schedule.
