West Sussex could see first snow of 2021
Much of the county is under one of two separate weather warnings on Sunday (January 24th)
West Sussex could see its first snow of 2021 on Sunday (January 24th), with two yellow weather warnings being issued by the Met Office.
The vast majority of the county will be under at least some kind of warning by 8am on Sunday, with the exception of a few areas around Selsey Bill and the Manhood Peninsula.
One warning, for snow, comes into effect at 3am and lasts until 9pm on Sunday, covering western areas of the county including Chichester, Petworth and Billingshurst.
The other, for snow and ice, kicks in at 8am and lasts until midnight on Monday for the rest of the county, affecting areas such as Bognor, Littlehampton, Horsham and Worthing.
Around 3cm of snow is expected to fall in some areas of the county, with a maximum of up 10cm on areas of higher ground.
Some parts of the country will likely see either wintry showers or sleet instead.
What can we expect?
For those under the snow warning:
Possible travel delays on roads stranding some vehicles and passengers
Possible delays or cancellations to rail and air travel
Some rural communities could become cut off
Power cuts may occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected
For those under the snow and ice warning:
Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services
Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
Here's what the Met Office is saying:
"An area of rain, sleet and snow will move into southeast England from the west on Sunday morning, lingering here for much of the day before gradually clearing Sunday night.
"1-3 cm of snow is possible in places, mainly above 100 m. Areas of 5-10 cm of snow are possible, particularly for parts of Shropshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Hampshire.
"Icy stretches will form as this arrives - some persisting during the day or reforming as the precipitation clears during the evening."
