A cordon has been put in place at East Wittering beach because of a suspected ordnance.

Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team were called to reports of possible ordnance on the beach at the end of Shore Road at around 11am today (24 December).

The team said in a Facebook post that the suspected ordnance was found and photos were sent to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team (EOD):

"Who agreed with us that it was probably nothing and an old metal buoy but wanted to err on the side of caution and investigate it further.

"A cordon was put in place on the beach until the Royal Navy E.O.D arrived on scene and declared it safe, and the item was removed from the beach and the beach was reopened.

"Ordnance comes in all shapes and sizes and can still be Highly Explosive, so if you come across anything unusual on the beach please do not touch it and dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard straight away!"
