A special week-long event to commemorate 100 years of the Royal British Legion (RBL) gets underway in Sussex today.

A 'Torch of Remembrance' will make its way across the county over the course of this week, with a small ceremony taking place at each location.

The ceremony will see the torch passed from a service veteran to a member of a youth organisation, to represent the act of remembrance being passed down to the younger generation.

County chair for Sussex at the RBL, Ray Collins says: "We're still doing this in exactly the same way as was started in November 1921 when we had our first remembrance service. That just tells you how poignant it is to carry out the act of remembrance in this most fitting way.

"We have agreed to carry on remembrance forever. That's the idea of passing the torch to the next generation, because they understand the importance of remembrance. And we would be hope that when they're older, they will pass that same tradition onto their children and grandchildren.

"We urge people to look out for our car...and if you see it parked up you'll know an event is about to happen and by all means come and join in".
