Bosses at Worthing United FC have expressed anger after vandals broke into the grounds this week.

In a tweet, the club said they are at their 'wits end with the constant vandalism'.

The club’s chairman, Mark Sanderson, said: “I went up last night (Tuesday 16) at around seven o'clock to find the damage, and the damage really consisted of a brick wall having been, I presume, kicked over.

“Worse than that, it was the debris that was spread around on the football pitch - there were stones, rocks and broken glass.

“I was on my hands and knees clearing broken glass off the pitch, which could have serious consequences when we next play, but you know, we're in the off season, we don't start again now until August, so we've got a bit of time to rectify things.

Mark told us the club has CCTV installed in some areas but it is often difficult to capture the perpetrators.

Police have been called several times over the years, with the club’s grounds becoming a hotspot for break-ins.

Mark added: “We've already had an offer from one of our ex-players, who's a bricklayer, who said he'll come up and rebuild the wall.

“My committee members are all holding their hands up to volunteer to come and check the pitch and we'll all be crawling around looking for stones and glass and stuff like that.

“It's not really the financial impact, it's just that we're all volunteers. We do it because we love football, so it's the disappointment that these characters can come along and destroy what we're trying to build.”

Sussex Police has been approached for a statement.
