Met Office issues double weather warning for Sussex
Heavy rain and flooding is expected across the county today (Monday 28th June)
Sussex is set for its second day of heavy rain and thunder as two weather warnings are in place across the county.
The yellow weather warnings by the Met Office came into effect on Sunday 27th June at 2pm and remain in force until 10pm tonight (Monday 28th June).
Heavy rain is expected to cause travel disruption and the chance of some localised flooding, as some areas could see more than 25 millimetres fall in the space of an hour.
What can we expect?
- Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.
- There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.
- There is a small chance of fast-flowing or deep floodwater.
- Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.
- There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.
The Met Office forecast states:
"Following clearance of overnight heavy rain, there is the potential for thundery downpours to develop across parts of southern England on Monday afternoon, lasting well into the evening.
"Where these form, they could prove to be slow-moving and produce large amounts of rainfall, with 20 to 30 mm falling within an hour and perhaps a few places seeing 50 to 60 mm in 2-3 hours.
"Lightning, hail and gusty winds may prove additional hazards in a few locations."
The bad weather this week could affect play at Wimbledon later, and England's Euro 2020 last-16 clash with Germany at Wembley tomorrow (Tuesday 29th June).
