Rules for dog owners in Adur could be about to get stricter.

Adur District Council is set to approve new rules for dog owners which could see fines of up to £1,000 and criminal records for those who don’t comply.

The district’s existing dog Public Space Protection Orders, or PSPOs, are also set to be extended until 2025.

Nearly 250 people responded to a public consultation with more than half saying they had witnessed dog-related anti-social behaviour like dog fouling, dogs off of the lead, and dogs where they shouldn’t be.

Concerns were also raised about a perceived lack of enforcement.

If passed by ADC’s full council, new rules would include: requiring dogs to be on leads along the footpath beside Adur Riverbank and Adur Ferry Bridge; banning dogs from Lancing Beach Green play area and skate park; and requiring owners to give their full name, date of birth, and address if they’re investigated for breaching any of the rules.

Walking more than six dogs at a time in public areas would continue to be banned.

If the rules are extended until 2025, dogs will continue to be banned from the following areas:
